Liwonde National Park

The 580 sq km Liwonde National Park comprises a diverse habitat; the scenic Shire River, backwaters and lagoons, marshes and open Savannah woodlands. The wildlife is even broader in variety and higher in numbers than in most other national parks; from the semi-aquatic, barrel-shaped, Hippopotamus (Mvuu in vernacular) and dinosaur-like Crocodile—to awesome Elephant, Buffalo, Sable, Impala, Waterbuck, the magisterial Baboon and the wacky Monkey on the river bank and into the hinterland; Black Rhino, Eland, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, Roan antelope, Zebra in the Sanctuary, a 40 sq km fenced-off area for targeted conservation within the park.
Predominant riverine birdlife includes the White-breasted Cormorant, Palm-nut vulture, Livingstone’s Flycatcher, Pel’s Fishing-owl, African Fish-eagle and Spur-winged Lapwing. Bohm’s Bee-eater, African Skimmer, White-backed Night-heron, Dickinson’s Kestrel and the much less common Brown-breasted Barbet are sighted more often in the floodplains. And the only population of Lilian’s Lovebird in Malawi is resident here. Altogether, around 300 out of Malawi’s 650 bird species have been sighted, making Liwonde National Park one of the best birding destinations in Southern Africa.
