Lilongwe-Dedza Pottery-Mua Mission/KuNgoni Cultural Centre-Kuti Community Game Park-Senga Bay-Lilongwe.
We head south from Lilongwe to Dedza, the highest town in Malawi and home to Dedza Pottery, with Dedza Mountain at 2,000m/7,000ft as backdrop. Stop for an hour for tea/coffee and some shopping; you can arrange for them to ship your purchases anywhere in the world. Proceed south for the scenic descent down the escarpment to the lakeshore road and loop back towards Salima for a stopover at Mua Mission’s KuNgoni Centre of Culture and Art in time for lunch, before being conducted around the art gallery, the cultural museum, research centre —crowning the visit with arguably the best opportunity to buy highly sought after carvings, so popular that some pieces from here have reportedly graced the Vatican museum and Buckingham Palace. Continue north to Salima and into Kuti Community Game Park for game viewing and overnight accommodation.
Formerly a Government owned cattle ranch, this 3,000 hectare reserve has since the late 1990s been turned into an environmental education and wildlife conservation centre run on voluntary basis and now boasts sizeable populations of giraffe, zebra, nyala, warthog and ostrich from relocated breeding stocks, complemented by indigenous kudu, duiker, bushbuck, genet, civet cats, bush pig and numerous bird species.
After breakfast, drive down to Sunbird Livingstonia Beach Hotel opposite Bird Island on the Salima shores of Lake Malawi. A comprehensive range of water sports is on offer (not included in the package price). After lunch, start off at 14.00 hours for a leisurely drive back to Lilongwe allowing for en-route photo opportunities.
